More than fifty years ago, in 1962, Georgiana Brown Harbeson, Frances K. Talbot, and Eleanor (Babe) Lovering met in Mrs. Lovering’s home in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia and formed a chapter under the American Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild of the United Kingdom. Eleanor Lovering was elected to be the first Chapter President of what was then known as the Delaware Valley Chapter. In 1963, the chapter had its first Exhibit at the Philadelphia National Bank, and in 1964, the Delaware Valley Chapter was officially accepted as the first chapter of the American Branch and held its first Annual Meeting. By 1965, the chapter had 212 members. In 1969, Eleanor Lovering was elected first National President of the American Branch. In 1970, Needle Arts Magazine began publication, and a decision to withdraw from London and become The Embroiderers’ Guild of America was reached at the American Branch’s National meeting. In 1971, The Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc. was officially incorporated, and by 1972, at the end of Mrs. Lovering’s term, there were 17 chapters in the United States.
